8: The Wartime Alliance 1941 to 1945

The Grand Alliance developed after the US entered the Second World War and Hitler declared war on America on 11th December, 1941; it consisted of Britain, the Soviet Union and the US fighting the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan.

1. How effective was the Grand Alliance, 1941 - 45?

This section overlaps with Paper Two:

Task One

ATL: Thinking and communication skills

In small groups read through the timeline of events on the PDF attached.  Identify the following themes:

A] Where and when was the Grand Alliance engaged in fighting in the same campaigns / areas

B] Which Grand Alliance partner seems engaged in most of the fighting in the war on the land in Europe?

B] Which Grand Alliance partners engaged in most of the fighting in the war in the Atlantic at sea?

C} What was the role of the war in the air in Europe?

D] What reasons might the US and Britain give for delaying opening a ‘second front’ in France until June 1944?

How effective was the Grand Alliance: timeline of Second World War?

2. What were the main reasons for Axis defeat in 1945 and Allied victory?

 Task One

ATL:  Research and self-management skills

In small groups research the reasons for Allied success in each of the following areas:

  • War on land
  • War at sea
  • War in the air
  • Overall strategy
  • Technology
  • Organisation of economy

You can use the attached table below to help you

2. What other factors contributed to the Allied success?

Note: Work through the ATL on this page first: 3. Second World War: Practices (ATL)

Grid to explain why Allies won in 1945

Task Two

ATL: Self-management and communication skills

1. Using your research from the previous task, reorganize your evidence in a new chart under two columns: Allied Strengths and Axis Weaknesses (click on the eye for further points that you could add your chart)

2. Organise a class debate on the following resolution:

‘The war was won in 1945 not from German weaknesses but from Allied strengths’.

Richard Overy. Why the Allies Won.

Allied strengths:

While Hitler faced increasing economic difficulties after 1942, the resources of the Allies grew stronger: the USSR's economy rapidly transformed into a wartime economy and Russia was producing more armaments and better -quality armaments than Germany by 1943. The centralised state economy of the USSR proved more able that Hitler's Nazi state to produce what was needed to fight a prolonged war and the US also overtook Axis powers in terms of production

The Allies were able to turn greater economic strength into effective fighting power and learned from mistakes of 1941 to increase the effectiveness of their combat forces:

  • they improved the quality as well as quantity of military forces and technology
  • they made sure there were excellent back-up services providing support and supplies to the troops
  • they set up  a large civilian apparatus to support the Allied forces, which allowed them to mobilise their economic, intellectual and organisation strengths of the purpose of waging war

Strategic decisions were key  e.g. focusing firstly on defeating Germany rather than Japan and the strategic bombing campaign which weakened Germany's ability to fight effectively and meant they had to divert funds into an anti-aircraft strategy

Weakness of Axis powers

By not committing Germany's full military capacity to the invasion of Britain in 1941, Hitler allowed Britain to survive. This meant that Britain kept the war going in the West, in the Atlantic and Africa; it was also the launching pad for the second front.

The invasion of the Soviet Union was a huge mistake; Germany then had to fight on two fronts

Declaring war on the US was a major error ; the USA's entry into the war allowed the Allies to invade Italy, carry out devastating raids on Germany and open up the Second Front in 1944

Hitler's personal conduct of military operations was disastrous; this can be seen most clearly in the USSR . Another serious mistake was to concentrate on producing V-rockets when Germany could have been developing jet aircraft which might have restored German air superiority and weakened the Allied bombing campaign of 1944 - 45

Hitlers' mistakes meant that the war when on much longer than he had expected and Germany increasingly suffered from material shortages as the war continued

The home front was not as effective; women were not employed in munitions factories until late in the war. The German military resented and rejected interference and direction from civilians which prevented any useful collaboration between civilian and military experts.

10. What was the impact of the Second World War on civilian populations of any two countries between 1939 and 1945?

Whereas in the First World War, civilians counted for only one-twentieth of the war dead,  in the Second World War they counted for up to two-thirds of the deaths. This shift was because of the power of the new weaponry and also because the new mobility of war brought the fighting to far greater numbers of people than had been the case in the First World War. There was also an ideological and racial aspect to the war which meant that sections of populations were deliberately targeted, with the intent that they should be deported or even eliminated entirely.

In addition, civilians were mobilised on a much greater scale than they had been in the First World War; the major combatants mobilised between a half and two-thirds of their industrial workforce and devoted up to three-quarters of their national product to waging war.

Task One

ATL: Research skills, Thinking skills and communication skills

Get into groups of four.  Choose ONE country to research.  There is a lot of material on the following countries that would facilitate a sound essay on this topic:

Britain

Germany

USSR

France

However, you could choose any European state that was impacted by the Second World War.

You should focus your research on the following areas:

  • Impact of the war on social and cultural life
  • Impact of the war on role of women in society
  • Impact of the war on economy and standard of living
  • Impact of the war in terms of casualties / home-front military target / occupation / resistance
  • Impact of the war on politics and civic society

Feedback your research to your groups.  Also produce a hand out for the rest of your group on your country. Ultimately, you need to ensure that you can discuss two countries in an essay on this topic.

Task Two

ATL: Thinking skills

Discuss your case studies in detail and plan the following essay question together:

Examine the impact of the Second World War on the civilian populations of two countries between 1939 and 1945.
